I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread devoted to A380 production updates. (ie: first flights, ferry flights, delivery flights, etc, etc).

I will start it off...

I guess I was wrong, only the French and Spanish governments are involved. It's a totally apolitical organization, in the heart of nationalist Europe no less (sarcasm intended). From wiki:

"As of 3 July 2007 41.63% of EADS stock is publicly traded on six European stock exchanges, while the remaining 58.37% is owned by a "Contractural Partnership".[32] The latter is owned by SOGEADE (27.38%), Daimler AG (22.41%), SEPI (5.46%) and Dubai Holding (3.12%).[33] SOGEADE is owned by the French State and Lagardère, while SEPI is a Spanish state holding company. France also owns 0.06% of publicly traded stock.[32]

In October 2005 the British Ministry of Defence warned European politicians to stop, as it sees it, interfering in the corporate governance of EADS. The UK Defence Procurement Minister Lord Drayson has hinted that the UK government, a major customer for EADS, may withhold future contracts. "As a key customer, we see it as important for EADS to move in a direction that is free from political interference." [34]"

I'm sure the German government exerts no "indirect influence." (sarcasm intended part zwei)

Boeing hires people to build airplanes, Airbus builds airplanes so they can hire people.

According to my vague sources, the launch operation for the Korean A380 into Kennedy is on 02 AUG. I need to verify if this date is when it departs ICN or when it arrives at JFK (as it is a next day arrival)?

Postponed from Aug 2nd to Aug 9th. Operates Day 246 (daily effective Sept 8th) as KE081/082. Leaves ICN at 11.00 local time and arrives JFK at 11.55 the same day. It then leaves JFK 2hrs later at 14.00 local time and arrives ICN at 17.20 the following day.

Lufthansa has received its first A380... it was on display today at Düsseldorf airport and I went there by bicycle to join the crowd of fans. It will be used on the Frankfurt - Tokio route, not so interesting for backpackers.

Has anyone used the plane already, and does it really make flights cheaper for travellers?

Down here they call them the A180 because almost every time you get on one it has to turn around and go back to the gate to have something fixed.

Singapore Airlines have had them for almost a year. I flew in one late last year.

Very comfortable. More leg room in economy seat than typical economy configuration in a Boeing 747-400. Of course being a new plane you also get updated personal entertainment units.

Flew Singpore-Europe in one and indeed more legroom in economy it seemed. Very quiet too. Otherwise nothing new.
However Singpore airlines had "only" some 570 seats in it, guzess you would need to put the full 800 int here to make flying cheaper - and then there goes the leg room of course...

I flew QANTAS' A380 from SYD-LAX and back.

Yes, nice to try out a new aircarft type.
I could afford economy and sat at the back of the plane. I was not allowed to go upstairs to have a look.

The seatback had wide screen LCD, apart from that everything is about the same as in any widebodied jet.
Once in flight, you won't know if you are in a A380 or B747.

If the A380 is configued to carry 800 people, then it is possible that fares may come down because of its capacity.

Singapore airlines actually has eceonomy seats upstairs as well.

Layout is like this. upper deck front to center is business, after eco. Lower deck nose is 1st, then remaining 3/4 eco.

Business looked comfy, those lie-down type of seats, while 1st had real bed kind of cabins.

I'm sure you can stack three or four levels of seating inside the Antonov 225, if windows and other creature comforts don't matter :-)

Can^t remember where the plugs were...
I think however that you could use your own headphones as well (standard jack). Plus USB port, to plug in you camera to watch images or your phone/mpeg3 player to listen your own music.
