The Last A320-100 Retired From Service

The last A320-100 in service, F-GFKA for Air France, was retired from service a few days ago, by the end of July.

Ironically, this aircraft was also the first A320 delivered to an airline and operated the very first Air France A320 commercial flight on April 18th 1988 (CDG-DUS-TXL).

Only 20 A320-100 built in addition to the prototype :

7 were ordred by Air Inter (transfered to AF in 1997 after AF and IT merged)
5 were ordered by British Caledonian (later to BA)
8 were ordered and delivered to AF.

Apart from the wingtip fences, the -200 had a substantial MTOW increase, as weel as increased fuel capacity.

The 21 A320-100 produced are :

msn 01 F-WWBA Airbus Company

msn 02 F-GFKQ Air France
msn 03 F-GGEG Air Inter
msn 04 F-GGEF Air Inter
msn 05 F-GFKA Air France
msn 06 G-BUSB British Airways
msn 07 F-GFKB Air France
msn 08 G-BUSC British Airways
msn 09 F-GFKC Air France (crashed at Habsheim during Air Show in June 1988)
msn 10 F-GGEA Air Inter
msn 11 G-BUSD British Airways
msn 12 F-GGEB Air Inter
msn 13 F-GGEC Air Inter
msn 14 F-GFKD Air France
msn 15 F-GGED Air Inter (crashed in Jan. 1992 during approach at SXB)
msn 16 F-GGEE Air Inter
msn 17 G-BUSE British Airways
msn 18 G-BUSF British Airways
msn 19 F-GFKE Air France
msn 20 F-GFKF Air France
msn 21 F-GFKG Air France

I'm not a fan of Airbus products but it is a sad day when an airplane is retired. Hope she will soon fly again with another airline someplace in the world.

Am I right in believing that the British Caledonian livery was only painted on one side of that frame?

I flew on G-BUSD (1992) and G-BUSE (1991). In fact 'SE was the first A320 I flew on and, rather happily, I was upgraded to Business!

Classic planes. Sorry to see them go.

Sad to see, anybody know the final hours and cycles on the airframe prior to it's removal from service?

All the A320-100 retired from service by AF or BA were stored or scrapped. None of them were sold to another carrier.
F-GFKA is currently stored. Don't know yet if it will be scrapped or donated to a museum to be preserved.

BCal was a launch customer for the A320 (along with AF and IT) yet never got to fly commercially in the Golden Lion livery.
Before delivery of the first aircraft was due in Spring 1988, BCAL had been taken over by BA.
Therefore, the aircraft were painted in BA colours in Toulouse, and the first BCal A.320 was delivered to Gatwick in March 1988 in BA livery.
But at least 2 of them were painted in the full BCal when they were still in Toulouse, wearing their French registration (F-WWDD, & DE, later became G-BUSB & SC)

The aircraft half painted in Air France colours and half in BCal colours you are refering to is actually msn 2 F-WWDA, one of the prototypes who later became F-GFKQ for AF.
It was used for demonstration flights by Airbus in 1987.

Sad to hear this. I flew an AF A320-100 FRA-CDG back in 1997 - my only time on the model.

Thanks for the update, I did actually get to fly on this one back in Aug 2001, in fact DUS-CDG. While not as intersting as some of the other aircraft I have flown on (N711PA, N707PA etc.), certinly was a stroke of good luck to get this one! Hope it gets a good home at a musuem or display.

I recall seeing that AF A320 at VCE on several occasions. I think I saw it last June at VCE.

22 years in heavy short range service are enough. Let her rest.

I had a nice flight on F-GFKE on 2Mar03 FCO-CDG. Nice that the -100 lasted so long although the -200 is much more impressive aircraft with more range.

The A320 is probably the best aircraft that Airbus has produced so far.

I think I flew this one recently, back on May 6, 2010 VIE-CDG or CDG-VIE on May 10, 2010.

Is there any way to find out if the flights were really operated by this particular bird?

Thanks!

What model of the A320 do Airbus use for as their test frame?
